Suriname

Suriname is located on the northern coast of South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean between French Guiana and Guyana, with mostly rolling hills and a narrow coastal plain with swamps. The country has a tropical climate moderated by trade winds, and its capital is Paramaribo. Suriname has a population of approximately 653,605 people who speak Dutch, English, Sranang Tongo, Caribbean Hindustani, and Javanese.

Suriname has an upper middle-income economy centered on gold mining, oil extraction, lumber, food processing, and fishing. The country is rich in natural resources including timber, hydropower, fish, kaolin, shrimp, bauxite, gold, and small amounts of nickel, copper, platinum, and iron ore. Suriname has adopted a new floating currency regime and is working with the IMF on a plan for economic recovery and fiscal sustainability, though it faces a high unemployment rate of 24.2 percent.
