About South Georgia
South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands is a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, east of the tip of South America, covering an area of approximately 3,903 square kilometers. The islands are mostly rugged and mountainous rising steeply from the sea, with South Georgia being largely barren with steep, glacier-covered mountains and the South Sandwich Islands being of volcanic origin with some active volcanoes. The climate is variable with mostly westerly winds and nearly all precipitation falling as snow. The territory has no permanent inhabitants and is administered from the Falkland Islands.
South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands has no established economy and its only identified natural resource is fish. The territory is also claimed by Argentina and is administered by a commissioner representing the British monarch. The islands are an important habitat for wildlife including penguins, seals, and seabirds. Access to the islands is restricted, and they serve primarily as a nature reserve and scientific research outpost.
