Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands located in the Caribbean in the Leeward Islands, east of the US Virgin Islands, covering an area of approximately 34 square kilometers. As of 2025, Sint Maarten has a population of about 46,738, with Dutch and English as official languages. The island is of low, hilly terrain of volcanic origin with a tropical marine climate ameliorated by northeast trade winds. Philipsburg serves as the capital, and the government operates as a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy.

Sint Maarten has a high-income, tourism-based Dutch autonomous constituent economy with a GDP of $1.74 billion and a GDP per capita of $45,800, driven by tourism and light industry. Natural resources include fish and salt. Sint Maarten experienced severe hurricane-related and COVID-19-related economic recessions, with a multilateral trust fund helping offset the economic downturn. The territory has no property taxation and functions as a re-exporter to the neighboring French territory of Saint Martin, with a life expectancy of 72.3 years.
