About Saint-Martin

Saint Martin is a French overseas collectivity located in the Caribbean in the Leeward Islands, east of the US Virgin Islands, covering an area of approximately 50 square kilometers. As of 2025, Saint Martin has a population of about 33,093. The island features salt as a natural resource, and most of the population is found along the coast with the largest concentration around the capital of Marigot. The government operates as a parliamentary democracy under a Territorial Council.

Saint Martin has a high-income French Caribbean territorial economy with a GDP of $649.21 million, extremely reliant on tourism. The territory was hit hard by Hurricane Irma in 2017, which caused near-total destruction, and also suffered severe impacts from COVID-19. Saint Martin has some offshore banking and is import-dependent, with duty-free commerce and a yachting destination supporting the economy. The island shares its land border with the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten.
