Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated organized territory of the United States located in the Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic, covering an area of approximately 9,104 square kilometers. As of 2025, Puerto Rico has a population of about 2.98 million, with Spanish and English as official languages. The island is mostly mountainous with a coastal plain in the north and precipitous mountains to the sea on the west coast, with a tropical marine climate that is mild with little seasonal temperature variation. San Juan serves as the capital, and the government operates as a republican form of territorial government under US sovereignty.

Puerto Rico has a US Caribbean island territorial economy with a GDP of $125.84 billion and a GDP per capita of $44,100, driven by pharmaceuticals, electronics, apparel, food products, and tourism. Key agricultural products include milk, plantains, bananas, tomatoes, chicken, oranges, mangoes, guavas, pineapples, eggs, and pumpkins and squash, while natural resources include some copper and nickel with potential for onshore and offshore oil. The unemployment rate is 12.5% as of 2024, with a life expectancy of 81.9 years. Puerto Rico was hit hard by COVID-19 and hurricanes after a decade of continuous recession, with a declining labor force and high poverty rates.
