Mozambique

Mozambique is a country located in Southeastern Africa along the Mozambique Channel, between South Africa and Tanzania, covering an area of approximately 799,380 square kilometers. As of 2025, Mozambique has a population of over 34.2 million, with Portuguese as the official language alongside numerous Bantu languages including Makhuwa, Tsonga, and Sena. The country features mostly coastal lowlands, uplands in the center, high plateaus in the northwest, and mountains in the west, with a tropical to subtropical climate. Maputo serves as the capital, and the government operates as a presidential republic.

Mozambique has a low-income economy with a GDP of $22.42 billion and a GDP per capita of $1,500, driven by aluminum, petroleum products, chemicals, textiles, cement, tobacco, and food and beverages. Key agricultural products include cassava, maize, sugarcane, and tomatoes, while natural resources include coal, titanium, natural gas, hydropower, tantalum, and graphite. The unemployment rate is 6.6% as of 2025, though 62.8% of the population lives below the poverty line. Mozambique faces significant challenges including an Islamist insurgency threatening natural gas projects in the north and ongoing foreign debt restructuring.
