Montserrat

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean, southeast of Puerto Rico, covering an area of approximately 102 square kilometers. As of 2024, Montserrat has a population of about 5,500, with English as the official language. The island is volcanic and mostly mountainous with a small coastal lowland, experiencing a tropical climate with little daily or seasonal temperature variation. Plymouth serves as the capital, though it was abandoned after volcanic eruptions, and the government operates as a self-governing overseas territory of the UK.

Montserrat was formerly a high-income economy, but volcanic activity beginning in 1995 destroyed much of the original infrastructure and economy. The island has negligible natural resources and relies on aid from the United Kingdom. A new capital and port are being developed, and the territory is investing in geothermal and solar power generation. Montserrat is also known for its music recording operations. The population has significantly declined from pre-eruption levels, and the southern half of the island remains an exclusion zone due to ongoing volcanic activity from the Soufriere Hills volcano.
