About Laos

Laos is a country located in Southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand and west of Vietnam, covering an area of approximately 236,800 square kilometers. As of 2024, Laos has a population of about 7.95 million, with Lao as the official language alongside French, English, and various ethnic languages. The country is mostly rugged mountains with some plains and plateaus, experiencing a tropical monsoon climate with a rainy season from May to November and a dry season from December to April. Laos has a lower-middle-income economy with a GDP of $16.50 billion and a GDP per capita of $8,600, driven by mining of copper, tin, gold, and gypsum, as well as timber, electric power, agricultural processing, rubber, construction, garments, cement, and tourism. Key agricultural products include cassava, root vegetables, rice, sugarcane, bananas, and coffee, while natural resources include timber, hydropower, gypsum, tin, gold, and gemstones. The unemployment rate is just 1.2% as of 2025, though literacy is 75.6% and life expectancy is 69.2 years. Laos continues to develop infrastructure including the new Laos-China railway, though it faces challenges from high inflation, high debt, and labor shortages.
