Guyana

Guyana is a country located in Northern South America along the North Atlantic Ocean, between Suriname and Venezuela, covering an area of approximately 214,969 square kilometers. As of 2024, Guyana has a population of about 794,000, with English as the official language alongside Guyanese Creole, Amerindian languages, and Indian languages. The country features mostly rolling highlands, a low coastal plain, and savanna in the south, with a tropical climate that is hot and humid, moderated by northeast trade winds with two rainy seasons. Georgetown serves as the capital, and the government operates as a parliamentary republic.

Guyana has undergone a dramatic economic transformation driven by offshore oil discoveries, with a GDP of $24.84 billion and a GDP per capita of $70,300, one of the highest in South America. Key industries include bauxite mining, sugar and rice milling, timber, textiles, and gold mining, while natural resources include bauxite, gold, diamonds, and hardwood timber. The unemployment rate stands at 22.3% as of 2024, and the literacy rate is 85.6%. Guyana is leveraging its extensive forest coverage for carbon credit offsets and continues to develop its financial sector while addressing challenges in economic diversification and infrastructure development.
